Cosmetic dentistry in Rotherham, costed before you decide

  • Look at the teeth and gums, and hear what you would change
  • Start at the gentle end: what would work while removing the least tooth
  • Write down every option with an estimate for each
  • Say so when the honest answer is to leave things alone

No pressure to decide on the day. Nothing is agreed until you have the estimate in writing.

Wondering which of these would suit you?

A look at the teeth and gums, a conversation about what you would change, and an honest account of what is realistic. You leave with options and an estimate.

The question worth asking first

Not "which treatment gives the best result", but "how much of my tooth does this cost me". Enamel does not grow back. A tooth that has been shaped for a veneer will need something on it for the rest of your life, and that is a reasonable trade for some people and a bad one for others.

So we tend to start at the gentle end and work up, and we will tell you when we think the answer is to leave things alone. If what you want is not something we would recommend, you will hear that too, with the reasoning.

Straightening first, sometimes

If teeth are crowded or turned, moving them can achieve more than covering them, and it leaves the teeth themselves untouched. It also usually means less bonding or fewer veneers afterwards, if you still want any at all.

That is a conversation rather than a rule, and it depends on what is bothering you and how long you are willing to spend on it.

Talk through what you want to change

The first appointment is a conversation about the options, and about how much of the tooth underneath each one costs you.

Questions people ask

Where to begin, what the risks actually are, and the one question people ask that has an uncomfortable answer.

I am unhappy with my teeth and do not know where to start.

With an examination, and not with a treatment. Health comes before appearance, because there is no point building something onto a tooth with decay under it or onto gums that are inflamed.

From there the conversation is about what specifically bothers you. Colour, shape, position and gaps are four different problems with four different answers, and people often arrive asking for the most drastic one when the thing bothering them would respond to the gentlest.

Is cosmetic dentistry safe?

It is a set of medical procedures, so it carries risk like any other. The ones that actually come up are infection, gum problems, sensitivity or damage to the nerve of a tooth, and occasionally a reaction to a material.

What keeps those rare is unglamorous: a dentist who is registered and does this regularly, proper sterilisation, materials from a known source, and you following the instructions you are given afterwards. Ask about all four. They are fair questions and a practice that minds being asked has told you something.

Can cosmetic dentistry fix an overbite?

It can make one look better, which is not the same thing. An overbite is a position problem, so the treatments that actually correct it are orthodontic, and a pronounced one occasionally needs jaw surgery rather than braces.

Veneers, bonding or crowns can be built up to create the appearance of straighter, more even teeth over a bite that has not moved. Sometimes that is a reasonable choice made with open eyes. It is not a reasonable choice made because nobody mentioned that the bite itself could have been treated, so we will mention it.

See the options and the cost before you decide

You do not have to commit to anything to come in. Ask what your options are, hear what each one costs you in natural tooth, and leave with an estimate.
