Inlay & onlay

Inlays and onlays are restorations placed on the back teeth to repair a crack, fracture or decay. An inlay fits within the confines of the teeth, similar to a filling. An onlay extends over the cusps of the treated tooth. These can be made of either plastic resin, metal or porcelain.
They are used when the damage to the tooth’s structure is not severe enough to warrant a crown but cannot be treated with a filling. Unlike traditional metal fillings which can actually reduce the strength of the teeth by up to 50%, inlay and onlays help to strengthen teeth by up to 75%.
The procedure involves removing old filling or decayed tooth structure under local anaesthetic, preparing the tooth cavity and then taking an impression of the tooth to fabricate a custom-fit inlay or onlay. The treatment requires two visits to complete.
